Description

The Diesel Technology program will teach students the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to service and repair diesel-powered equipment. Hands-on learning is infused throughout the curriculum, and students benefit from cooperative education internships giving them additional insight into the industry.

Students will learn to repair and test diesel fuel systems, engines, refrigeration, electronic control systems, power trains, brakes, electrical systems, suspension, and air conditioning systems, as well as gain experience with various hand tools and test equipment. Admission occurs in the fall. Students are encouraged to apply early as openings are limited 

Preparation

Awareness of these technical standards may help students determine suitability for this career.

• Must have the ability to perform accurate work in a timely fashion, communicate effectively with others, present information in a clear and concise manner, and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Requires good manual dexterity, good color vision and hearing, and ability to speak.
• Requires continuous walking, frequent standing, bending, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders, kneeling, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, reaching above and below shoulder level, and occasional sitting, crawling, lifting 50 pounds from knee to shoulder high, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
• Requires continuous use of tools and occasional use of foot controls.
• Continuously exposed to noise; frequently exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, and extreme heat and cold; and occasionally exposed to vibration, poor ventilation, and confined areas.

Delivery

Class will be taken online synchronously with required, supervised cooperative education internship at an approved facility. Internship will reinforce the education and training received in the classroom and lab facilities to real-life service practices.

Program is limited enrollment based on industry internship availability and a required interview with industry employers whom will choose their intern candidates.

Requirements

Students must complete an ASE MAST Automotive Technical program or equivalent prior to being admitted into the program in addition to a program application. Students who complete the curriculum requirements receive a Program Certificate in Diesel Technology. See the Program Admission tab for more information.

Career Opportunities

This workforce ready education gives graduates opportunities to work as truck, tractor, or heavy equipment technicians for dealerships, independent shops, or national service centers.
